Section III - Hazards Identification

Emergency Overview: Clear amber liquid with mild detergent odor. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. May cause severe eye and skin irritation and/or burns. Avoid ingestion. May cause severe irritation or burns to mouth, throat and stomach. Spray mist may cause irritation to respiratory tract. High pH is harmful to aquatic life. Noncombustible. Spills are slippery. Reacts with acids, ammonium salts, reactive metals and some organics.
Potential Health Effects:
     Eye Contact: Causes severe irritation and/or burns.
     Skin Contact: Causes irritation and/or burns with prolonged contact.
     Inhalation: Spray mist irritating to respiratory tract.
     Ingestion: May cause irritation and/or burns to mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach.
     Chronic Hazards: No known chronic hazards.
     Carcinogenicity: Not listed by NTP, IARC or OSHA as a carcinogen.
     Signs/Symptoms of Overexposure: Prolonged contact may cause mild irritation or dryness to sensitive skin.
     Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Dermatitis and similar skin disorders.
     Physical Hazards: Spilled material can be slippery. Can etch glass if not promptly removed.
 

Section IV - First Aid Measures

Eyes: In case of contact, immediately flush with plenty of cool water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses if present. Get medical attention.
Skin: In case of contact, immediately flush skin with plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. If irritation or burn develops and persists, get medical attention.
Ingestion: If swallowed, DO NOT induce vomiting. If victim is fully conscious, give water, milk or other fluids to dilute. Get medical attention immediately. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention.

 Section VI - Accidental Release

Personal Protection: Wear chemical goggles, body-covering protective clothing, chemical resistant gloves, rubber boots.
Small Spills (less than 1 gallon): Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves. Mop up and neutralize liquid, then discharge to sewer in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations or permits.
Large Spills: Keep unnecessary people away; isolate hazard area and deny entry. Do not touch or walk through spilled material. Stop leak if you can do so without risk. Prevent runoff from entering into storm sewers and ditches that lead to natural waterways. Isolate, dike and store discharged material, if possible. Use sand or earth to contain spilled material. If containment is impossible, neutralize contaminated area with dilute solution of mild acid such as vinegar or citric acid and flush with large quantities of water to drain. If material is contaminated with greases, oils or other, recover neutralized liquid and dispose of in accordance with Federal, State, and local requirements.
Disposal Product and un-neutralized solutions are strongly alkaline. Dispose in accordance with Federal, State, and local requirements.
CERCLA RQ: There is no CERCLA Reportable Quantity for this material.
Environmental Hazards: High pH is harmful to aquatic life. Only water will evaporate from a spill of this material.

Handling Precautions: Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Avoid breathing spray mist. Keep container closed. Promptly clean residue from closures with cloth dampened with water. Promptly clean up spills.
Storage Precautions: Keep containers tightly closed. Store in clean steel or plastic containers. Separate from acids, reactive metals, and ammonium salts. Storage temperature 0-95ºC. Loading temperature 45-95ºC. Do not store in aluminum, fiberglass, copper, brass, zinc or galvanized containers. Keep from freezing.
 

Section VIII - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection

Engineering Controls: Use with adequate ventilation especially when used with heated equipment or if mist is produced.  Keep containers closed. Safety shower and eyewash fountain should be within direct access.
Respiratory Protection: Use NIOSH or MSHA approved dust and mist respirator where spray mist occurs.
Protective Clothing: Wear body covering protective clothing, rubber apron and alkali resistant, impermeable gloves.
Eye Protection: Wear chemical goggles and/or face shield.
Work/Hygienic Practices: Use good personal hygiene practices, wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking, or using toilet facilities.
